After finding a book about creation, Abigail found an illustration that to her looked like Jesus. She ran over to me, waving the book in the air, and declared, "Jesus is alive!" I was pretty amazed - partly because Abby is only 19 months old and partly because I find that many people don't think they can teach babies the Bible.
Perhaps Abby only picked this up in the last several weeks as we've been exploring Easter at home and in our church's nursery. But I think that it's probably second-nature to her to make such connections because she's been hearing the Truth being taught day in and day out since she was in the womb. And much of what she hears is directed to toddlers and preschoolers, so it's obviously put simply enough that even a 19-month-old can know the Truth that Jesus is alive!
After hearing me make a comment to Claude about how people don't think they can teach the Bible to babies, Joshua piped up. "Mommy, why don't people think they can teach babies the Bible?"
"Maybe they think that babies can't understand, Joshua."
"But that's not true! Babies do understand!"
Exactly! And for all of the complex concepts that we grown-ups are still trying to wrap our heads around, the little ones just take it at face value - like how Joshua, 4-years-old, told me that he wanted to make a cross out of giant craft sticks so that he can (literally) take up his cross and follow Jesus. She may not understand all of the implications of Jesus' death and resurrection, but Abby knows that Jesus is alive and that is a great place to start!
